Rice is the main food crops and also the main source of income for millions of rural households in Vietnam. In the first 9 months of 2018, the rice prices have decreased compared to the beginning of 2018 but increased compared to the same period last year.

In recent years, Vietnam rice paddy industry have been through a difficult period. However, the agricultural production in the first 9 months of 2018 had a quite good result.
The rice consumption of the 2018-2019 season is expected to increase slightly by 0.5%. Vietnam’s main export markets are Asia (accounting for 70%) and Africa (accounting for 14%). In the first 9 months of 2018, the rice export volume is estimated to increase by 6.7% and the rice export value is estimated to increase by 21.3% compare to the same period in 2017.

China maintains the largest rice importer of Vietnam, accounting for 23% of Vietnam’s total export volume and the rice export turnover in the first 9 months of 2018.
Rice exports are still concentrated in some major enterprises, state-owned enterprises such as VINAFOOD I, VINAFOOD II and state-owned enterprises at the local level.
According to the forecast, 2018 will be a promising year for the rice paddy industry when two countries that compete directly with Vietnam rice paddy industry, India and Thailand, are in shortage of supply while the demand for rice is still high.
