VIETNAM PLASTIC INDUSTRY

Currently, Vietnam plastic industry continues to depend on imports. In 6M/2018, imported plastic materials increased by 12.7% in volume and 23.4% in value over the same period in 2017. The proportion of production structure of plastic enterprises is: packaging plastic 37.2%, consumer plastic accounted for 32.4%, construction plastics accounted for 17.4%, engineering plastics and other plastics accounted for 14.9%. Total production of plastics 6T/2018 is estimated at 4.22 million tons, slightly up 17.8% comparing with 2017.

Plastic consumption in 6M/2018 is estimated at $ 9.3 billion, an increase of 11% over 2017, thanks to the rapidly increasing demand for plastics, especially in the packaging plastic and construction plastic. Capital contribution and dominant share of foreign investors also help enterprises have more capital and professional sales strategies, thereby boosting domestic consumption.

At present,Vietnam plastic industry is in a situation of import surplus when import turnover of plastic products is much higher than export. According to the General Department of Customs, in the first 6 months of 2018, Vietnam imported plastic products increased 11.3% over the same period in 2016 while exports increased 20% over the same period in 2017. According to the VPA forecast, plastics export turnover will continue to increase in 2018, with the growth rate of about 12-15%. Japan and the United States will be Vietnam’s major importers of plastics.
