VIETNAM LOGISTICS INDUSTRY

In Vietnam, the logistics industry has increased in size. However, the potential of the sector has not been fully exploited, Vietnamese enterprises only meet less than ¼ logistics needs. Vietnam ranks 64 out of 160 countries and is in the middle of ASEAN by LPI index.
Transportation accounted for the largest proportion in the turnover structure of the logistics industry. In the first 9 months of 2018, Cargo volume was estimated at 1.211 million tonnes, up 7.5% over the same period of 2017. Road transport contributed the largest proportion of revenue in the industry.
In the first 9 months of 2018, the output of goods transported by rail reached 4.2 million tons, up 0.8% and 2.9 billion tons.km, up 11.8% compared to the same period in 2017; The sea freight output reached 57.7 million tons, up 5.2% and 115.4 million tons, up 4.9% compared to the same period in 2017; the output of road freight reached 934.7 million tons, up 10.8% compared to the same period and 61.7% million tons.km, up 12.1% compared to the same period in 2017; the output of goods transported by air reached 265.8 thousand tons, up 19% and 702.5 million tons.km, up 16.5% compared to the same period in 2017.
The logistics industry in Vietnam is facing many challenges such as the challenge of competitive risk as the increase in export and import activities makes logistics become an important service sector of international trade. In logistics, there are potential risks from the organization’s inside and external factors such as transportation risks, outsourcing, human resource management, suppliers, etc.
VIRAC forecasts in the period from 2018 to 2023, the road transport continues to maintain a low growth rate and still be the type of transport having the largest revenue.
