VIETNAM LEATHER AND FOOTWEAR INDUSTRY The world leather industry is characterized by small or medium-sized family businesses with negligible world leather consumption growth rates for cowhide and a 2% reduction each year for sheep and goat skins. The double annual growth rate from 2012 to 2016 reached 14%. In 2018 leather production increased 7.4% compared to the same period in 2017. Leather and footwear production is a key industry of Vietnam, however, the production of Footwear industry is still mainly in the form of export processing, the input materials depend on customers’ designatons to import. Therefore, the value-added of products is low. The US is still the main export market for enterprises in the industry with about 35.9% of the total annual export value. The East Asia Block is a fast growing export market of Vietnamese footwear products benefiting from tax cuts on leather and shoe products and intra-regional circulation of the ASEAN Economic Community. In 2018, Vietnam’s footwear export turnover increased by 10.83% compared to the same period in 2017. In which FDI enterprises accounted for 78.59% of total export value. At the same time, export of bags, suitcases, briefcases … grew rapidly with a CAGR of 2010 – 2018e reaching 17.1% per year. In 2018, the export turnover of this product group increased 3.3% over the same period in 2017. It is forecasted that the export value of the Footwear industry will increase by 8-15% in the period of 2018 to 2020. |
