The global tanning industry is characterized by small and medium sized family businesses. The Far East continues to be the largest net importer of cow leather. Latin America is expected to continue to be the most important net exporter of bovine leathers. The compound annual growth rate for the period 2012 – 2017 is x.xx%. In the first 6 months of 2018, the leather production reached xx.x million, decreasing by xx% compared to the same period of 2017 due to flood and typhoon situation, constantly affecting the quality of breeding and hides collecting. In 2017, Vietnam imported USD 1.65 billion of tanned leather. Leather and footwear manufacturing is a key industry of Vietnam. Being the third country in the world in terms of production output, but Vietnam also is the second country in export turnover of footwear. Import value of footwear in the years 2010 – 2015 of Vietnam was recorded at a low level of just under USD 100 million. Inventory tended to decrease in 2016 and 2017.
