VIETNAM PLASTICS RESIN AND SYNTHETIC RUBBER INDUSTRY

Plastic resins and synthetic rubber are important inputs for many industries, especially plastics and cars. The development of the polymer industry is associated with the petrochemical industry and directly affected by price fluctuation, supply and demand of major raw materials such as crude oil, gas and coal. Global Polymer production capacity is predicted to continue to grow at an average of 3.9% from 2015 to 2020 (according to ICIS).

China is the leading producer of Thermoplastic, with output in 2016 reached 92.1 million tons. In 6M/ 2017, global production of rubber was xx,xxx thousand tons, in which synthetic rubber accounted for 55%, slightly higher than 2016 (54.4%). Rubber consumption reached xx,xxx thousand tons, in which synthetic rubber accounted for 54.3%, unchanged compared to 2016. Global synthetic rubber market is expected to continue to grow with the annual double growth rate of 5.1% in the period 2015 – 2023.

Production of plastic materials and additives in 9M/ 2017 was estimated at xxx thousand tons, up 32.8% over the same period in 2016 (xxx thousand tons). Due to the increasing demand of plastic materials, more and more enterprises have been involved in plastic materials and additives sector. In the first 9 months of 2017, domestic raw material consumption is estimated at x,xxx thousand tons, up 19.3% over the same period of 2016.

The demand for plastic resins has increased, resulting in a sharp increase in plastic resin import in the period of 2012 – 2016 with a CAGR of 19%. Total imports of plastic materials in the first 9 months of 2017 reached x.xx million tons, valued at x.x billion, up 12.4% in volume and 20.7% in value against the first nine months of 2016 respectively.

In recent years, Vietnam plastic industry has been highly evaluated in terms of development speed compared to other countries in ASEAN (rank second position after Thailand) with a production capacity of x.x million tons per year. Vietnam is also one of the fastest growing of plastics industry in the world.
