VIETNAM CHEMICAL INDUSTRY

Chemical industry plays an important role in economic development, supplying inputs to many essential industries for production and consumption such as fertilizer, paint and printing ink, pesticides, detergents … In 2017, the chemical industry contributed about $ 2,155.6 million, accounting for about 1% of the total export turnover of the country.

The chemical industry has eight product categories, including nitrogen fertilizers and compounds, detergents, primary resins and synthetic rubber, basic chemicals, paints and inks, pesticides, artificial fibers and other chemical products not involved in the above. In 2016, Fertilizer and Nitrogen Compounds accounted for the highest proportion in the industry by sales (about 22.6%), followed by the group of detergent products.

One of the biggest weaknesses of Vietnam chemical industry is the weak capacity for the supply of raw materials. Therefore, most of the inputs to the chemical industry are imported. For many years, chemical has been always in the top 10 most imported products and the main import market in China. The machinery and technical systems of the chemical industry are mostly at an average good level compared to some countries in the region, so the productivity of the industry is not high and the added value is low.

The chemical industry is a sector with many specific risks, especially safety risks when used and risk of environmental pollution. Most of the enterprises in this industry are small and medium-sized and are facing fierce competition with multinational corporations that have financial potential, high technological level as well as better marketing strategies.
