VIETNAM ANIMAL FEED INDUSTRY

Animal feed is an important factor in the development of the livestock sector, which is being considered as a way to ensure food security throughout the world. Animal feed production in the world is volatile but still increasing. Poultry feed accounts for the largest share, followed by feed for livestock.

In 2017 global production of animal feeds reached x.xxx,xx, increasing by x.xx% compared to 2016. In the past five years, global animal feed production increased by 10.4%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.4%. This remarkable growth was supported by the growth of the livestock industry as demand for meat, milk, and eggs is higher, reflected an increase in feed production of pig, chicken and dairy industry. This growth is mainly due to the increase in the production of pig and chicken feed in Europe and the feed production for pigs and pets in the Asia-Pacific region.

Animal feed production output of Vietnam in the first quarter of 2018 was x,xxx thousand tons, in which feed production for livestock and poultry was x,xxx.x thousand tons, increased 0.2% over the same period of 2017. Seafood production reached 1, xxx thousand tons, up 17.5% over the same period last year. The increase in animal feed production is due to increasing domestic and foreign enterprises’ investment and expansion of production despite the difficulty of the local livestock market. Animal feed consumption in the first quarter of 2018 reached xx,xxx billion dong, corresponding to the output of x,xxx thousand tons, slightly increased compared to the same period of 2017 but still very low compared with the time of 2015 and 2016. The causes are livestock situation still facing many difficulties; farmers are afraid of re-herding.

According to the USDA forecast, the total demand for animal feed in Vietnam in 2018 will increase by 2% compared to 2017. In 2017, USDA estimated that total animal feed demand in Vietnam is about xx.x million tons, decreasing by 15% compared to 2016. It is expected to reach xx.x million tons in 2018, in which industrial produced feed is xx.x million tons and self-produced feed is x.x million tons.
